New Jersey: The Promised Land--Proximity
A lot of people call New Jersey the armpit of the nation. It is quite clear they are uniformly wrong.
New Jersey is close to all the important things. You could be fifteen minutes and an hour and a half from New York and Philly respectively. You could be in DC or Boston within 4 hours. You are close to the ocean. You can ski at Mountain Creek in the winter. There are wineries, and breweries. There are plenty of things to do, not to mention the state is SMALL so it's relatively easy to get to everything. In fact, Philly and New York should be lucky they are so close to NJ.
A friend of mine once said, "Oh please, New York City is basically a suburb of NJ." So true, so true. You are close to things. Hop on the Turnpike and you can be at the Meadowlands for a basketball game.
Rutgers and Princeton, two of our nations finest universities are only minutes away. You are never far from importance.
Indiana (#14), however, is far from everything! What are they close to? Notre Dame? That school's football team SUCKS (they haven't been important since the invention of the facemask). Chicago? Okay, so they're close to mobsters, but they're state doesn't even have mobsters like NJ does. Indiana has nothing. Cornfields... It's like a twelve hour drive to relevance.
We are close to everything. And most of the time, we are everything.

AND I think Rutgers could beat Indiana in both basketball AND football this year... which adds to the awesome.

Right on Brother. And the Shore...how about the shore?
And Hunterdon County for cycling?
But I digress
A-freaking-men. This is why I want so badly to come back. Well said, Dave.
I would gladly come back to New Jersey--if I could bring my grandson and his parents along.
I think based on this argument, you are making an even BETTER comparison to the armpit - because the armpit is close to everything as well. The heart, the lungs, the brain...in 4 hours you could be in the cerebral cortex. I mean think about it!
Indiana would be the spleen in this scenario. and quite frankly, I'd rather be the spleen than the PIT.
That coming from the girl who in her argument is the stinky head cheese. GET IT? CHEESE....

Name a decent brewery in NJ. Please.
And don't tell me that Dogfish Head is in Delaware.
