FLASHFORWARD--Review and Spoilers

Based on a book by Robert J. Sawyer, the TV show features a great concept. What if everyone in the world blacked out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds and got a glimpse of their lives 6 months in the future?

ABC is trying to find their new LOST, and they may have. They find several interesting characters--FBI agents, doctors, babysitters, children and put out a pilot that is extremely compelling.

The flash forwards make for interesting mysteries. Why is a woman having a sonogram at 10 in the evening, for one? If a character saw nothing in the future, is he dead?

And what exactly is the FBI agent discovering, that leads a series of men to hunt him down and attempt to kill him?

(I can guess at the last one, mostly because I read the synopsis of the book... Wonder how close the series will stay? In the book, people flash forward 21 years instead of 6 months... My guess is "loosely.")

And in true LOST fashion, it has a great twist at the end of the episode--(I was wondering how cameras would play in... Would they black out too? Would they show what happened?)

There are a few drawbacks that I'll chalk up to being part of the pilot, but could detract from future episodes.

Some of the dialogue is really on the nose--mostly coming from the agents and the doctors as they try to explain some of what's going on, even though it's not necessary to the plot. It was distracting.

Also, in an effort to keep mysteries going, characters (much as they do in LOST) don't say anything about what happened to them? If they spoke up, it'd probably solve a lot of problems.

The one scene that really bothered me involved sharing their own flash forwards. The woman asks her husband to tell her about his. He does and when she asks about hers--DUH! Like he wouldn't--she refuses. For being a medical doctor, she's pretty dumb at that point.

But I give the pilot thumbs up and look forward (HA) to seeing what the series has in store.

Yeah, but the dude didn't tell his wife EVERYTHING about his flashforward, did he?

I think this is probably the best pilot I've seen, with so much promise.

Looking forward to next week.

He didn't, you're right, but at the same time, wouldn't that be a smart thing to do? Wouldn't you tell your wife everything so they could work it out in advance? He does everything to fulfill his future. Unless we discover he's doing that on purpose... to figure out what happened? But he hesitates enough when his daughter gave him the friendship bracelet to suggest that's not the case.

I'm intrigued, especially about the sponsor and why his wife's still alive. The show has a lot of potential, but we need to get more about these characters... Dig deep into their souls.

First, it's cute that you think he would tell his wife everything. How far away is your wedding?

But seriously, yeah, especially when she told him what she did. What she told him was completely uncool, so you'd think he would share with her, as well. These stories seem to live on the conflict of some folks telling all and some folks holding back. He's the FBI dude, so he wants more information than other people have -- he has to solve it. His wife doesn't have to, so why does she need HIS information? I think it's an intriguing glimpse into his character.

Eh, don't feel bad about that. But if you think it's going to solve a MAJOR WORLD SHATTERING PROBLEM or least hold a key to whether or not you can change it, the smart thing is to tell her. And yeah, after what she told him, he should say, "Oh, yeah, um... I was drinking."

I don't know. The show has a TON of potential, just parts of it were silly. LOST (which I LOVE) has that problem every once in a while. If I care enough about the characters, I can overlook it.

I agree, I completely loved it. It was captivating. I was actually squinting in disbelief at the TV a couple times. I usually don't visually react to shows. This one was awesome.

I agree with your critiques too, but I think for a pilot it was pretty damn solid. This is def my #1 new show.

I really, really liked it and have my fingers crossed. Seems like so many ways they can go: individual stories, an overall arc, conspiracy. I am geeked.

A sonogram at 10 in the evening? Interestingly enough, I had to go for a non-emergency MRI, and my original appointment was for five months down the road -- at 8:30 p.m. I got called early to see if I wanted to take a spot that was vacated by a cancellation. I had my MRI at, literally, 10:00 p.m. When equipment is more scarce than people, strange diagnostic test bookings like that can happen.

Still, given how good American health care is supposed to be, I'd guess you've just got a good catch. Why was that at 10:00 p.m.? I'm wondering now, too.

And I agree, telling your wife the truth is a very good idea. How can she help if she doesn't know? But that's sooooooo typical. :)

Overall, I loved the show. And I enjoyed your review. Thanks!

I was excited about the premiere of Flash Forward ever since I saw the previews months ago. The first episode was very well done, impressive cast of actors, lots of action, and tremendous suspense over how this will end up. I am looking forward to watching this show every Thursday.
